 How to Really Listen

Becca Ross

Coming into this Modern Dance class, I was excited to build on my previous dance experience and learn new ways to move, express myself, and connect with others. I saw it as a chance not just to improve my dance skills, but to grow as a person. I didn’t expect just how much I would take away from this class—both inside and outside of the studio.

My takeaways from Modern Dance are that practice really does make perfect. Every stretch I struggled with at the beginning of the course started to feel easier by the end, and now I feel way more confident doing them in front of the class. They’re also less stressful on my body now. In addition, I learned a lot about teamwork. By doing group activities and working together with my classmates on our final dance performance, I learned how to really listen to other people’s ideas and help teach the dance to anyone who was confused or didn’t understand how a move connected to the lesson. Lastly, I discovered how creative I can be. I hadn’t made up dances or expressed emotions freely through movement in a long time. At first, I didn’t think I would be good at it, but with encouragement and support from my professor and classmates, I was able to come up with movements and combinations that I felt proud to perform.

I have taken dance classes before, so I wasn’t nervous to enter the class. I’ve also taken similar classes to DAN211 at the University of Miami, like Ballet, so I felt pretty comfortable from the start. One thing I learned about myself during this course is that I’m a natural leader and tend to take initiative when given a task. For example, my group often looked to me to come up with choreography, remember the dance, and call out each move when it was time to perform. I didn’t mind stepping up because I wanted everyone in the group to feel confident and excited about our performance. I also learned how to express emotions more clearly through movement, and I feel like I’ve grown in my storytelling abilities as a dancer. This class helped me connect more deeply to the meaning behind the movements. I looked forward to each class because I was always learning something new, and I’m especially thankful for my teacher’s positive attitude and patience throughout the course. It made the experience even better and helped me feel supported while I improved.

I plan to hopefully go to law school after graduating next year, and I will take the lessons I’ve learned from this class with me. I learned how to work as part of a team, which will help me when I’m working with other attorneys and classmates during group study sessions and mock trials. I’ve also learned the importance of practice. I know that I’ll need to prepare and practice for speeches and study hard for exams in law school. This class also helped me develop performance skills, which I’ll definitely use when speaking in front of classmates and, one day, in a courtroom. I’ve learned how to express emotion through movement, and I believe that will help me connect with others and communicate more clearly during trials or presentations. I really loved my experience taking this class, and I hope to continue learning and growing in the other dance classes I take at UM.

In the end, Modern Dance taught me so much more than just steps and technique. It helped me grow in confidence, creativity, and leadership. It reminded me how powerful movement can be, and how dance can connect to so many parts of life—even future career goals like becoming a lawyer. I’m really grateful for everything I learned, and I’ll carry those lessons with me long after this class.

The Power of Presence

Sophia Talamas

This course has taught me that modern dance is more than just movement through dance because it is the freedom of modern dance that allows you to fully express yourself and your emotions. It allows you to tell a story to your audience and truly connect. Unlike more rigid dance forms, modern dance emphasizes individuality, creativity, and authenticity. It gave me permission to explore how my body moves naturally and how I can use that to communicate something personal and meaningful. And honestly, I’m also taking away the entire stretch routine the professor taught us. It’s amazing. I truly believe it’s going to extend my life and keep my body healthier by training it to move the way it was meant to.

Throughout the learning process, I experienced a mix of vulnerability and empowerment. At first, I was a little unsure of how to let go and move without worrying about perfection or structure. But as the semester progressed, I grew more comfortable with trusting my instincts and allowing my emotions to guide my movement. I appreciated the supportive environment of the class that encouraged risk-taking and self-exploration, and especially no judgement. Each session felt like a release and a chance to connect more deeply with myself and others.

As a biochemistry student preparing for a future in the medical field, this class has taught me the power of presence. How you carry yourself, your energy, your posture, sends an important message to others. Even though I’m not performing on stage in the traditional sense, I’ve realized that I’m still performing professionally every day. The way I show up, the way I present myself, and the confidence I bring into a room can directly impact my opportunities, relationships, and overall success. Modern dance gave me a deeper awareness of that and a stronger connection between how I move through space and how I move through life.

A Space for Release, Creativity, and Growth

Karen Abboud

Taking this dance class has been an incredibly eye-opening journey. One of my biggest takeaways was learning how meaningful even the smallest movement can be. I came to understand that dance is not only about big, bold gestures but also about the intention, time, speed, and emotion behind each movement. I found that within every step, pause, or breath, there is an opportunity for peace, self-expression, and connection. The class taught me how to be present and how powerful simplicity can be in conveying emotion and telling a story through movement.

At the beginning of the course, I’ll admit I felt shy and unsure of myself. I had never really performed movement-based work before, so I was nervous to step out of my comfort zone. But little by little, I began to let go of that fear. The welcoming environment of the class and the support of my peers and instructor helped me feel more comfortable expressing myself. As the semester went on, I found myself looking forward to class — not just for the physical movement, but for the way it made me feel mentally and emotionally. Dance became a space for release, creativity, and growth.

As an architecture student, I see many ways to apply what I’ve learned in this class to my own field. Movement, rhythm, and space are just as important in architecture as they are in dance. The way people move through a space, how a room flows from one to another, or how light and shadow change throughout the day — these are all forms of choreography in the built environment. This class has helped me think more deeply about how bodies interact with space, and I plan to carry that sensitivity and awareness into my future designs.

In conclusion, this dance class has not only helped me grow personally but has also given me tools that will enhance my work in architecture. I’ve learned to value stillness, to trust in small gestures, and to embrace vulnerability through movement. This experience reminded me that growth often happens when we allow ourselves to move — both literally and figuratively — with intention.

Expressional Development

 Nicole Goldun

DAN211 has yielded two core insights applicable to my development as an adult. I've gained a deeper understanding of movement as an authentic mode of communication, prioritizing individual expression over prescriptive forms. The curriculum underscored the impact of subtle physical actions in establishing presence and conveying meaning.

My engagement with the course involved a transition from basic apprehension, as a nineteen-year-old who has not danced since adolescence, to a newfound comfort in physical exploration and intuitive expression. This course was able to cultivate an awareness of my body and mind as a communicative instrument.

The most significant takeaway for my professional trajectory in life is the critical role of embodied emotion and motion. Throughout the course, I've recognized how physical carriage – encompassing posture, energy, and deliberate movement – profoundly influences professional perception. A confident and intentional physical presence can enhance communication effectiveness, build connections, and project leadership qualities in various life as well as business contexts that I will carry into the real world.

This modern dance course has unexpectedly provided valuable lessons in authentic expression and the language of my body in everyday life, offering me a unique perspective on dance and wordless expression that no other dance class has given me. I intend to integrate such teachings into my life.

 Different Backgrounds and Training

Maddi Pohl

Taking this dance class has been one of the most refreshing and inspiring experiences of my spring semester. It reminded me that dance is more than just movement—it's a way to connect with others, express ourselves, and grow through both discipline and creativity. Throughout the course, I found joy not only in dancing but also in observing the beauty of how others move, no matter their level of experience.

One of my biggest takeaways from this class was the opportunity to watch dancers of all different backgrounds and training come together and express themselves. There’s something truly beautiful about seeing how even the simplest movements can hold power and meaning. I loved watching everyone immerse themselves in the process and seeing their personalities come through in their movement. I also really enjoyed learning about different modern dance styles and the founders who helped shape them. One of the most valuable things I learned was a new way to approach choreography—starting with small phrases and building from there, then adding music last. It completely changed the way I think about creating dance.

During the learning process, I often felt calm and full of joy. This class became a space for me to de-stress and reset. The stretching routine we did at the beginning of each class was something I always looked forward to—it helped ground me. I appreciated the pace of the course; it was never overwhelming, which allowed me to fully enjoy the experience and really connect with my classmates. I felt supported and encouraged to explore new ideas, both as a dancer and as a creative thinker.

Even though I’m currently studying nursing, if I could do anything in the world, I would open a dance studio. This class gave me tools and insights that I would absolutely use if that dream became a reality. I would apply what I’ve learned about choreography, creative process, and the importance of making dance accessible to all levels of experience. I would create a space where students feel safe to explore movement and express themselves—just like I was able to in this class.

This course reminded me of the deep connection between movement and meaning. I’ve learned new techniques, gained a better understanding of modern dance, and found joy in learning. Whether I continue dancing on the side or one day open a studio of my own, the lessons I’ve learned here will always be with me.

An Authentic Medium to Express Oneself.

Sarabeth Levin

Everytime I step into the dance room I am immediately at ease. As a freshman in college, I have found that being able to leave the chaos from reality outside the dance classroom has been extremely beneficial towards my mental and physical health. By relieving soreness and preventing injury, routine stretching exercises taught me how to condition my body so I am best able to live my daily life. The focus on intentional movement, where every movement and variation has expressive significance, also made it easier for me to see dance as an authentic medium to express oneself. By the end of the course, I absorbed the basic principles of breath control, alignment, and spatial awareness, which will continue to guide how I operate long after the school year is over.

As an athlete, I know the importance of having a stretching routine to prime your body before performing. In the beginning I had judged the extensive stretching. Soon after, I found myself being excited to come to class so I am able to really tap into meditation and relieve my sore muscles. Sometimes I would struggle with balancing and my body wouldn't accept a certain movement. Over time, I saw how I would no longer fall when trying to stand on one foot! I saw that students constantly would help their classmates in developing their solos rather than working only on their own work, demonstrating that everyone truly wanted the best for one another. When compared to my other classes, which usually consist of silent boring lectures, unfriendly classmates, and little support for teamwork, this particular class was incredibly refreshing.

After I graduate, I plan to get my master's, become a kindergarten teacher and help kids with learning disabilities. I am aware that the days ahead of me will be long, stimulating and even stressful. Whenever I've been sitting for a long time, I'll add my stretching exercises to keep myself centered and rejuvenated. Additionally, when working with children who have special needs, I can incorporate breath-work and movement therapy into my teaching to support their development and well‑being. In the end, I learned the importance of flexibility, intention, and embodied collaboration from Modern Dance Level 2.

Creating Something Beautiful

Ella Corigliano

Throughout this class it totally changed how I see movement and expression. I'm way better at understanding rhythm and using my body to communicate now. Plus, I picked up some unexpected skills in choreography and improvisation, which are super fun.

At first, I felt confused by the learning experience since it was such new material to me, but the performances made it click. Plus, working with other dancers and getting feedback from the instructor kept me going. Seeing how I could actually create something beautiful was a huge motivator.

Since I'm studying nursing, I see a ton of ways to use this stuff to improve patient care. Being able to think on my feet and make quick decisions is crucial in emergency situations. I'm hoping to use these skills to advocate for my patients and ensure they receive the best possible care. Basically, I want to be the best nurse I can be, and this class gave me some awesome tools to get there.

The Power of Storytelling Through Movement

Shelby Pasternack

As someone who has danced for many years of my life, one thing I will always remember is that each teacher and each style of dance has something different to offer. There is always room for more improvement, new techniques, and things to learn about how your body moves. One key takeaway from this class was the power of storytelling through movement. I felt that every class served as a new lesson on how I can tell a story through dance and how to communicate different messages. Another key takeaway from this class was the exception of mistakes. I felt very comfortable in the classroom and able to make mistakes without being judged. The space felt safe to try new things, and analyze how to become better. My last major takeaway from this class is the importance of warming and stretching your body. Over the course of the semester I noticed that the routine of warm up has lengthened and increased the flexibility of my body. I also learned how important it is to start off class with a warm up to avoid injury.

At first, I felt a little bit intimidated by the class size. I was not very used to being surrounded by so many strangers and having to express myself in front of them. After a few weeks, I began to feel extremely comfortable in the classroom. This class felt like a sense of relief to me. Dance is something I love to do, and I always looked forward to being able to learn. The learning process was very educational and applicable to my everyday life. By the end of the semester I felt ready to perform all of the techniques I learned over the semester, and show my development.

I had truly never thought about how dance could apply to Advertising, however, it directly does more than I expected. One aspect of this class that I learned was storytelling, which is very prevalent in Advertising. For example, if I were to plan a video campaign I could use dance to send the message rather than just dialogue. Another thing I learned was experimentation. It takes many failures to do something right, and I think that remembering that will truly help me excel in my field.

The Multiple Ways Modern Dance Can Be Expressed

Jazmyn Aaron

Throughout this course I have learned a lot about different styles of dance and how modern dance was created. I’ve learned that modern dance was a way to dance more freely as opposed to ballet where things are more structured and criticized. I appreciated the videos that were shown in class. It helped us to get a better understanding of the multiple ways modern dance can be expressed. Not only did I learn more about modern dance but I also learned about the importance of stretching. I looked forward to the beginning of class all the time because it felt really good to stretch and learn different breathing exercises.

In the beginning of the class I was excited to be a part of the dance class because I haven't taken a dance class in a while. I loved the fact that you were patient with us and explained the meaning behind different dances. My favorite day was when we were learning multiple styles of dance like Salsa, Ballroom, etc…… I also felt like the class was very relaxing but fun at the same time. I was able to learn how to create my own dance and in the end I did and I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would.

The major that I am currently in is Health Science, this major is very demanding and can get stressful at times. I also know that it is important to sometimes take a step back and breathe. With the breathing exercises that I learned in class I can apply this to classes in the future. When I feel overwhelmed I can breath in and out slowly to calm down. I will also be integrating stretching into my daily routine because it is important to stay healthy and take care of your body especially in rigorous careers like this one. I felt like this class also taught me about adaptability, things don’t always have to be perfect and we should be able to adapt to difficult situations when the time arises.

Overall, I really enjoyed this class and with this being my first semester I felt that this class was one of my most fun ones, and it was just nice to get a break from the academic classes and just enjoy dancing.

Connecting with Your Emotions and Movement

Remi Rosenfeld

Joining this dance class I was nervous. I have never really been able to dance and always in my high-school classes I was the friend that stood out as “the bad dancer”. But since taking Modern Dance I’ve learned there isn’t a good or bad dancer but connecting with your emotions and movement. I will admit that sometimes in dance I would joke around or not see myself as a dancer. But from doing my solo I realized it doesn’t matter what you dance but how you do it and the story you tell. Each movement you make you are saying something with your body and I would never have realized or thought of movement in that way without taking this class!

I’ve learned the importance of being connected to your body and allowing yourself to have a break. I realized after dance I would feel more awake and that moving my body was both fun and good for me. I learned how movements are a way of expressing yourself that words can not. I was able to see emotion through dance especially during the solos. Each movement is a story and I learned even though it may not look like conventional dance it is still dance and you're telling a story.

I will be able to use what I've learned about movement and the importance of stretching in my daily life. As someone wanting to go into Public relations it's all about communicating and body language. I have now seen how you move and present yourself tells a story making me more aware of my body language. As well as knowing the importance of stretching and moving your body daily. I will use these stretches throughout my life as a way to wake me up and keep my body moving. I am very happy I took this class and was able to change my perspective on dance and movement.

 Not Just About Steps

Lizzie Emby

Taking this course has been a meaningful experience for me. One of my biggest takeaways is the importance of self-expression through movement. I learned that dance is not just about steps, but about emotion, storytelling, and connection. I also realized how important body awareness, focus, and creativity are, and how they can help in everyday life, not just in dance.

During the learning process, I felt both challenged and inspired. At first, I was nervous because I didn’t have much dance experience, but the class atmosphere was welcoming. Our teacher encouraged us to try our best and express ourselves, even if we made mistakes. Over time, I felt more confident and open. I started to enjoy pushing myself, and I learned to trust my instincts more.

As a communications student, I see a strong connection between this course and my field. Communication is not just words—it includes body language, emotion, and creativity, all of which I explored in this class. I can use what I learned about expression and movement when giving presentations, working with others, or telling stories. It helped me understand how powerful non-verbal communication can be.

Overall, this class helped me grow as a person and a communicator. I’m grateful for what I’ve learned and excited to apply it in my future work.

 Embracing my Creativity

 Vanessa Aiello

Throughout my time in Modern Dance, Level Two, I have learned a lot about myself. I have learned how to work with others, how to get out of my comfort zone, and how to embrace my creativity.

I have had so many take-aways from this course. Usually, I like to work alone. I would rather take initiative in a group project and have everyone sit back, for example. However, in an ensemble piece, one cannot do that. Everyone has to equally be immersed in the dance because, if not, it will not speak to and move the viewers nearly as much. Therefore, throughout the ensemble piece, I learned how to truly work with others, while also feeling comfortable enough to share my opinion and thoughts on the piece. Another take-away was simply becoming a more confident individual. By dancing in front of a crowd and allowing myself to be vulnerable in the sense that I can mess up sometimes, I was able to grow my inner-self. In addition, an important aspect that I gained was that I was able to let my creativity flow. Since I am on the pre-med track, I find it very hard to find time where I can be artistic. As I have a very intensive class schedule, there is not much time where I find myself truly having fun. Therefore, when I signed up for this class, I knew I would be able to truly express myself.

Throughout the learning process, I found it difficult, yet also fun at the same time. Because I usually draw and crochet to allow my artistic abilities to flourish, I found myself having a difficult time adjusting to moving my body in a creative way. I never danced before, so I knew this would be a challenge. However, with our amazing professor’s skills alongside my supportive classmates, I ended up learning so much about dancing techniques. In the beginning, I found it hard to simply dance out of my imagination, so it was helpful having the skills taught to us. For instance, in my solo, I was able to use the weight/tension technique we learned in class.

However, towards the end of the course, I had also realized that it had become easier for me to express myself on my own, meaning that my dancing abilities were truly starting to flourish. My goal in life is to become a plastic surgeon. Therefore, I feel like this career coincides heavily with what I learned in this course. Being creative is an important aspect of a plastic surgeon as you need to find ways to complete the surgery that the patient desires. Another important take-away is confidence. One cannot be cutting into another human without being truly and utterly confident in themselves, or else they may risk a complication. It is crucial that I take these aspects I have learned into the rest of my life with me into my field of study. My journey of becoming this confident, independent, self-expressive person started when I came to the University of Miami. This school is very out of my comfort zone in the social sense and I knew that it would force me to break out of my shell, and it has. Although I have a long way to go, I feel that I would be very far behind in the journey of finding myself if I had not enrolled in this class.

More Confident in My Own Movement

Liliana Li

One of the biggest things I can take from this class is a stronger sense of freedom and confidence in how I express myself physically. Modern dance pushed me to stop worrying so much about what movement is “supposed” to look like and instead focus on what feels right according to my own body. Since we weren’t allowed to use outside choreography, I had to come up with everything on my own, with only the in-class exercises and past ballet training as a resource. This was very intimidating at first, but over time, I really started to enjoy that freedom. It helped me be more present and let go of the idea that movement has to look a certain way to be called a “dance”. I also started seeing how much creativity I actually have when I’m not relying on examples and comparisons. That freedom made me feel more connected to what I was doing, and more confident in my own movement.

At the beginning of the course, I felt extremely unsure of myself. Having to choreograph without looking anything up made me nervous, because I didn’t think what I came up with would be good enough. I felt like I was just guessing my way through, which felt very awkward. But as I kept bringing myself back to this environment, I started to notice small changes. My movements felt less forced, and I wasn’t as focused on how it looked from the outside. I found moments where my body felt like it was actually communicating something. Those moments made the process more enjoyable, and I stopped judging myself as much. It took a while, but I went from feeling exposed to actually being okay with showing up as I am.

Even though this was a dance class, I think a lot of what I learned will stick with me in a professional setting, especially in how I carry myself when presenting in business. Being expressive and intentional with movement isn’t just for dance or the stage. It shows up in posture, eye contact, and even how you hold the attention in a room when you’re speaking. I’ve realized that how I physically present myself can make a big difference in how I’m received. In business, this kind of presence can help build trust and make communication more engaging. I want to be able to bring some of that same calm confidence in dance into how I show up with others, and this class gave me a new perspective on how to enhance that elegance.

 Importance of Body Language

Joud Alwuhaib

Taking a modern dance class was a new and different experience for me as a computer engineering student. I am used to working with logic, numbers, and clear rules. But in dance, there are no strict rules. It’s about feeling, moving freely, and expressing yourself. This class taught me that movement can tell a story just like words or code can. It made me see the creative side of life, not just the technical side.

At first, it was hard for me to let go and move naturally. I’m so used to being careful and exact in my work that it felt strange to just follow what my body wanted to do. But over time, I got more comfortable. The class made it okay to make mistakes and try new things. That helped me build confidence, not only in dancing but also in trusting my ideas in general.

I also learned how important body language is. Even outside of dance, how you move and carry yourself can say a lot. In engineering, when I present a project or talk to a team, my posture and energy matter. This class showed me that confidence isn’t just about what you say, but how you act and move.

Another thing I loved was the stretching we did in every class. Sitting at a computer all day can make my body stiff and tired. The stretches helped me feel better and more awake. I plan to keep doing them so I can stay healthy and focused during long study or work sessions.

In the end, this dance class taught me more than just how to move. It showed me how important creativity, confidence, and taking care of my body are. These are lessons I will take with me as I continue my journey in computer engineering and in life.

Stepping Back and Supporting Others

Monique Frauenheim

I was genuinely excited to take this dance class, especially after completing Modern Dance I last semester. I looked forward to having more creative freedom and the chance to choreograph something of my own. When I found out we’d have full autonomy, and could collaborate with others to turn our emotions and personal experiences into movement, I was even more inspired. What I didn’t realize at the time was just how meaningful this class would become as an emotional outlet. At the start of the semester, I was feeling a lot of anxiety about the end of freshman year. I’ve always struggled with change, and coming to this school was already a huge transition—I moved into my dorm two weeks late because I wasn’t sure I had made the right decision.

After finally finding my rhythm here, I’m now faced with the reality that things will start to change again after summer. Friends will be living in different places, taking different classes, and the comfort of familiar faces might fade. That uncertainty has been hard to sit with. This class, however, reminded me to step outside my comfort zone, to connect with new people, and to take creative risks. It gave me space to process what I’m feeling now—and helped ease some of the apprehension I have about what’s ahead in sophomore year.

One of my favorite parts of this class was the learning style. The warmups reminded me how important it is to take care of my body. To stretch regularly so I can perform at my best. I really appreciated when our professor emphasized that we can’t fully express ourselves through movement if we don’t first prepare our bodies. That stuck with me. It would be such a shame to hold back emotionally in dance simply because of physical limitations that could’ve been avoided. The idea that your body is the vessel for emotion made me think more deeply about the impact movement can have.

I also loved the collaborative activities and games we did as a class. They pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me explore new movement styles and techniques that I eventually brought into my own choreography. I didn’t realize at first how each of these exercises was intentionally building my dance vocabulary until it came time to create my piece—and then it all clicked. One of the biggest challenges I faced was moving with intention. I learned that choreography isn’t just about following the music or making pretty shapes; the music should support the meaning of your movement, not dictate it. I definitely came into this class with a strong jazz background, which made it hard to let go of polished, aesthetic movement. But once I allowed myself to take that risk—to move from the inside out instead of focusing on technique first—I finally felt what it meant to truly dance.

Halfway through the course, I faced an unexpected challenge—a knee injury that forced me to rethink everything I had planned for my solo. I was incredibly disappointed because I knew I wouldn’t be able to perform the piece the way I had originally envisioned. I had to modify it, which was frustrating at first, but it ultimately taught me how to adapt and stay creative within limitations. More importantly, it taught me a valuable life lesson: sometimes things happen that are out of your control, but the show must go on. Instead of letting the injury hold me back, I used the opportunity to step back and support others. I found so much joy in helping my classmates refine their pieces, and in doing so, I felt more connected to the group. It ended up being one of the most meaningful parts of the class—I built new friendships and realized that collaboration can be just as fulfilling as performance.

 Body Language, Emotion, and Creativity

Ava Marasco

Throughout this course, I came to an understanding that dance is not just any performance, but is a strong form of storytelling that communicates emotion, identity, and culture. One key takeaway from this class was the power of storytelling through movement. I felt that every class was a new lesson on how to tell a story through my dancing.

The first couple of weeks  I felt a little bit intimidated. I was not used to being surrounded by so many people and having to express myself in front of them. Dance is something I've always loved to do, and I always looked forward to being able to learn more. I was extremely excited to perform at the end of the semester to show and express all the things I have learned.

As an advertising/communications student, I see a strong connection between this class course. Communication isn’t  just words but it includes body language, emotion, and creativity.I will use what I learned about expression and movement when giving presentations and simply working with others. I am very happy I took this class and went through with it and now it has changed my perspective on dance and movement.

A Powerful Tool for Reflection and Emotional Release

Angelina Malik

Throughout this modern dance course, I gained a deeper understanding of the importance of body awareness and intentional movement. I learned how to connect more deeply with my body and use dance as a form of expression beyond words. The course emphasized mindfulness, grounding, and using movement to communicate emotions and ideas. One of my biggest takeaways is that dance is not only an art form but also a powerful tool for reflection and emotional release.

During the learning process, I always felt a sense of calmness and positive energy both entering and leaving the dance room. The environment was welcoming and allowed me to explore movement freely without judgment. Each class left me feeling refreshed, recharged, and more connected to myself. The good energy throughout every session made it easy to be present and genuinely enjoy the experience.

As a biology major, I can apply the lessons from this course to my understanding of the human body and its natural rhythms. Being more in tune with movement and body awareness will help me in studying anatomy, physiology, and the connection between physical health and emotional well-being. The mindfulness skills I developed through dance will also help me stay more grounded during stressful academic and professional challenges. This course has shown me how interconnected the body and mind truly are, which is essential in both biological research and healthcare.

An Authentic Extension of the Self

Sibylle Cao

Taking Modern Dance this semester is definitely transformative for me personally. Through the study of Modern Dance’s rich history, rigorous technical development, and collaborative projects, I gained a deeper appreciation for dance as a powerful means of communication. This course challenged my preconceptions about movement and offered me a new perspective: dance is not merely performance, but an authentic extension of the self.

One of the major takeaways from this course was learning to view dance as a language of personal expression and there are no definite terms to resist how dance should be like because everyone expresses themselves differently. In class, creating original movement phrases and developing a solo piece allowed me to experience firsthand how movement can embody thought, emotion, and identity. As I learned to choreograph and improvise, I realized that dance could convey complex feelings that words often fail to capture. I also enjoyed working collaboratively with my ensemble members to make a group piece, where we learned the importance of team work and had a lot of fun exploring different movements in our piece.

Throughout the learning process, improvisation and solo choreography felt intimidating at first as exposing raw, personal movement in front of others required a level of openness I had rarely practiced. However, as the semester progressed, I felt more comfortable presenting myself in front of others through creativity and encouragement. Collaborative work further built a sense of trust and belonging within the class community, fostering an environment where experimentation and creative risks were encouraged. By the end of the course, I no longer viewed dance as something purely technical or performative, but as a deeply personal means of storytelling.

The skills and insights I developed in Modern Dance are pretty applicable to my academics. As a global health premed major, the ability to think creatively, communicate effectively, and collaborate with others is crucial. This course taught me that self-expression and authenticity are not only important in the arts but are essential qualities for leadership, teamwork, and personal fulfillment.

This course has been a fun journey for me with artistic discovery and personal empowerment. I leave this class not only with better technical skill but also with a renewed sense of creativity, self-awareness, and appreciation for the human capacity to communicate through movement. I am grateful for the opportunity to have experienced dance in such a meaningful and transformative way.

A Communication Tool

Guoning Sun

Throughout this semester in Modern Dance II, I have experienced a deep journey into the history, techniques, and emotional depth of modern dance. This course allowed me not only to improve technically but also to understand dance as a powerful form of personal and artistic expression.

One of my biggest take-aways from this course was learning how important body connection, rhythm, and expression are to modern dance. Through studying Laban’s movement theories, I realized how breath, spatial forms, and flow can completely change the way a dancer moves and connects with an audience. I also learned from Mary Wigman’s emotional approach to dance, which showed me that expressing inner feelings through movement can be just as important as technical precision. Working with movement phrases that focused on energy, body connectivity, and space really helped me develop a deeper understanding of dance as both an art and a communication tool.

At first, I felt a little overwhelmed because modern dance felt so different from what I was used to. It challenged me to let go of strict technique and focus more on internal emotion and natural movement. However, as the weeks went by, I started to enjoy the freedom it gave me. I felt more connected to myself and to my classmates, especially during the ensemble work where trust and collaboration were important. The journaling assignments also helped me slow down and reflect on my progress, which made me feel proud of how much more comfortable and expressive I became in my dancing.

I plan to apply what I learned in this course to my future studies and career by always remembering the importance of self-expression and body awareness. Whether I continue with dance or work in a different creative field, being able to communicate emotions physically and work collaboratively with others will be important skills. The techniques from Laban, Wigman, and Jooss taught me to approach movement and creativity with both structure and freedom, which I believe will help me bring more authenticity and emotion into any artistic or professional project I take on.

Modern Dance II taught me much more than steps and techniques—it taught me how to express myself honestly and work meaningfully with others. This experience helped me grow not just as a dancer, but as a communicator and artist. I am grateful for everything I learned and look forward to applying these lessons in the future.

Appreciate Dance so Much More

Savannah Bray

Whenever I first signed up for this course, I did not think I would enjoy this class as much as I did. Every time I came to class I would genuinely have so much fun. I learned so much about myself and my body and how to properly stretch and warm up. I was able to learn the history of dance and modern dance and how it came to be the way it is today.

During the learning process of this course, I felt I learned so much more about dance than I have in any other dance class I’ve ever taken. I’ve been dancing since I was 2 and I’ve never learned about the history of dance and about the founders of modern dance until I took this class. By learning about the history of dance, I learned to appreciate dance so much more and to appreciate the things my body can do.

With all the things I learned throughout this course, I can use the ways we stretched and learned about our body to use good ergonomics and to keep my body as flexible as possible. Since I am a pre-med, I will be on my feet all day. By stretching and using good ergonomics, I can keep my body as healthy as possible and keep a good range-of-motion while I grow older. I am so grateful I was able to take this class and I hope that in the future I can take more of your classes!

An Outlet for Our Unique Abilities, Ideas, and Self-expression

  Sofia Braun

I always dreamed of taking a dance class in college. I was so excited but nervous, not knowing what to expect from this course when I enrolled. I can now confidently say it has been the best experience in college so far and I am so grateful I took this class. The class has helped me move my body, expand my creativity, and connect with my mind-body connection more.

Some of my take-aays from this course have been how important it is to stay moving and to even stretch. I remember walking into the first class and hearing you tell us your age — we were all in shock! Seeing how in shape, energetic, and graceful you are really inspired me to start now and commit to keeping my body healthy for the long term. I also learned how valuable and important it is to explore my inner creativity. Dancing allows us all to have an outlet for our unique abilities, ideas, and self-expression. Also, I was introduced to so many different styles and types of dancing I had never even heard of before, which broadened my appreciation for dance as an art form.

During the learning process in this course, I felt a mix of excitement, curiosity, and growth. At first, I would doubt myself or feel shy because some of the movements I was not used to or familiar with. With time, I began to gain more confidence and was more comfortable with our incredible class. It was rewarding to notice how much I had grown from the beginning of the semester to the end. Each class was an opportunity to step outside my comfort zone and push my body and mind. I loved the positive and friendly classroom environment, which made it so much easier to let go of the fear of judgment and just enjoy learning. I actually made so many new friends just from being in the class, which was amazing too!

I plan to apply the lessons I’ve learned from this course to my field of study, which focuses on Public Relations and minors in Marketing and Psychology. In those fields, creativity, confidence, mind-body connections, health, and self-expression are incredibly important. Dance has taught me how to tap into my creative intuition and trust my body language, which are skills that will be useful when selling ideas, launching campaigns, and connecting with audiences. In addition, the memorization and repetition involved in dance all connect and relate to being disciplined enough to be successful professionally. By remaining active and centered, I will also be more able to manage stress and maintain a good work-life balance in my future career.

Taking this dance class was an academic experience as well as a journey of growth and creativity. I learned how to connect with myself in new ways, how to celebrate movement, and how to express myself in different ways.  I am truly thankful for the memories, lessons, and inspiration this class gave me. Hopefully I will be able to take another one of your classes and our class will definitely always stick with me.

 The Body and Mind

Anyla Asif

As a former gymnast and cheerleader, I registered for this class as a personal escape from my other courses as a Biology pre-med major. I have had experience with dance in my childhood and find that these types of classes and activities are more relaxing and fun to me. I went into this dance class as the singular class that I willingly signed up for, no requirement toward my major or minor. A take-away from this course is the importance of intention with each movement, the time of each movement, the speed of each movement, all coming together to tell a beautiful story. There is true meaning behind each move that you make which is pieced together to create a greater meaning.

The learning process in this course felt different than what I expected. I am aware of the need to stretch prior to any type of exercise, but the warm up that took place before starting each class was new to me. This class taught me to be patient and present. The modern moves that were taught about levels, directions, space, etc. was not what I had imagined coming into this class. But exploring this new world of dance was a very eye opening experience because it taught me that the simplest moves that we would not typically consider “dance,” actually are. Every move we make as humans is us dancing. I now have a new perspective on the world of dance and what it means to me.

As a biology student, this course has increased my appreciation of the human body and its rhythms. This growing appreciation for the human body will work hand in hand with my field of study and benefit my performance in anatomy and physiology an the connection to physical well being. The mindfulness that I gained through dance will also enable me to stay grounded when confronted with academic challenges. This course was a reminder if how important the body and mind connection is,  fundamental to both biology and medicine.

 Something Cohesive and Meaningful

Isabella Ribeiro Da Cunha Per

Taking this course has been a transformative experience for me, especially as someone who entered with no background in dance. One of my biggest takeaways has been the sense of freedom and creativity that movement can unlock. I learned the true importance of stretching and making it a consistent part of my daily routine, not just for physical health but also for mental well-being. Planning and creating my individual dance showed me how growth within the learning process naturally shapes artistic choices. I especially enjoyed exploring techniques like force in movement, which allowed me to express emotion more powerfully. Additionally, working on the ensemble piece was an incredible experience — it was rewarding to see how each of us brought different aspects of our own dances into something cohesive and meaningful while still so fun.

During the learning process of all the different forms of dance, I felt energized, challenged, and creatively fulfilled. From the beginning, even simple exercises such as spinning felt like a new and exciting way to connect with my body. As I became more comfortable, I noticed how much my confidence grew alongside my technical skills. It was interesting to see how music could transform a dance piece — both in the ensemble and my solo work. Choosing "Hero" for the ensemble came easily and enriched our group dynamic, while finding the right song for my personal piece required more exploration. When I stumbled upon "R.I.P." by Labrinth, it opened a new emotional layer to my performance that I hadn't experienced before. That moment reminded me of how dance is not just about movement, but also about emotional storytelling.

In my major, psychology, the lessons I’ve learned from this course will have a lasting impact. Understanding how movement can benefit mental health and emotional expression is something I hope to incorporate into future work, especially when promoting healthy habits for children and adolescents. Dance taught me firsthand the importance of showing up, embracing teamwork, and allowing space for personal growth. The experience of discovering how good it feels to simply move — to connect mind and body and others — is a tool I will always carry with me, both personally and professionally.

Overall, this course has given me far more than technical dance skills; it has taught me the power of movement as a form of healing, growth, and self-expression. I am grateful for everything I have learned and excited to continue incorporating these lessons into my life and career.

Movement Can Express What Words Often Cannot

Zixian Lin

Taking a dance class this semester has deeply influenced both my body and mind. At first, I struggled with coordination and rhythm, but over time, I became more confident and expressive.

Dance helped me build physical strength, flexibility, and posture, but it also taught me discipline, patience, and emotional release. I discovered that movement can express what words often cannot. Each class became a space where I could let go of stress and connect with my emotions in a creative way.

Dance also improved my self-awareness and gave me a deeper appreciation for music and storytelling through movement. This experience made me realize the power of art in personal growth.

Making Progress with the Different Skills

 Maya Grossblatt

I found modern dance to be a very fun and interesting class. Although I did gymnastics for years growing up, I have never really tried dance before, especially modern dance. This class was always very exciting and engaging. I loved learning the different elements there are to this type of dance, and how to create my own piece out of them. Moreover, diving into the history of modern dance was very fascinating, to be able to understand where the topics we were studying actually came from.

Overall, I have gained many takeaways from this course. I liked how the overall idea was learning how we can express ourselves through dance and I learned that modern dance has many different creative aspects. There wasn’t a strict set of dance standards that I had to follow, and I was able to move my body in my own way. Having done competitive gymnastics for years, I was used to a specific set of guidelines that everyone had to follow for each skill or movement, with proper form. However with this class it was very enjoyable to be able to move freely in any way just to express myself however I felt through movement. Additionally, I enjoyed the different activities we did throughout class. I thought the stretch routine was a very great opening to class and the idea behind incorporating it into our everyday routines. I definitely saw improvement with my own flexibility throughout the semester from the stretch routine and will continue to stretch going forward when I can. Additionally, I loved learning how to waltz, tango, and salsa during that one class. I’ve seen waltzing in movies and events, but I had never learned before this class!

Throughout the learning process of this course, I felt like I was making progress with the different skills. For example, with the flexibility warm up routine, I began to see a difference and improvement with my own flexibility as time progressed. Another aspect that I noticed is the creative and expressive part of modern dance. In the beginning when we were coming up with a metaphor for our solos, I was hesitant and unsure of what to do. However, as time passed by, we began working on the different types of movement, such as levels, the cube, breath, etc. I began to incorporate these ideals into my solo and I think that each dance class helped expand my dance creativity, and the development of my solo. Moreover, working in our ensemble groups was very helpful, as we incorporated each phrase into one group piece. Getting to see others practice their solos when we rehearsed was very interesting, as I got to take a look at the different ways people incorporated the phrases we had learned into their pieces.

I think that I can most definitely apply my takeaways from this class to my field of study. My major is exercise physiology and my minor is psychology. In modern dance, we learned about the importance of movement for your overall health, both physical and mental. It boosts your mood, keeps you strong, active, and healthy. Exercise physiology focuses on the study of movement and how the body responds to it throughout the different systems. This goes hand in hand with the points we talked about in class. For example, the importance of incorporating movement in our daily routines, whether it's stretching, dancing, or working out. Regardless, any type of physical activity is very beneficial for the body. We also talked about how exercise keeps you agile, enabling more range of motion and the ability to stay in better shape as you age. The therapeutic aspect of dance can be applied to psychology because it has positive effects on mental health overall, by providing a clear headspace, less stress, and the release of endorphins which increases mood.

Overall, I really enjoyed this class and learned many different takeaways, such as the positive effect of dance on wellness, how to express myself through emotion with dance, and the importance in continuing this type of movement, as it provides many benefits.

Focused on Creativity, Connection, and Growt

Rebecca Simensky

Ever since high school, dance has been a defining part of my life. As a competitive dancer, I spent years perfecting routines, mastering techniques, and thriving in the structure of performance-based training. When I got to college, I knew I wanted to keep dance in my life—but I also wanted to explore it in a new way. Enrolling in this class was a chance to step away from the competitive world I knew and engage with dance as an art form focused on creativity, connection, and growth. I came in hoping to stay active and involved in something I loved. What I didn’t expect was that this course would become one of the most rewarding experiences of my college journey so far.

One of the biggest takeaways from this course was the importance of lifelong movement and flexibility—both physically and mentally. I was especially inspired by your energy and grace, which reminded me that staying committed to your body’s well-being pays off at any age. The emphasis on stretching, listening to your body, and embracing new styles opened my eyes to a side of dance I hadn’t experienced before. I also learned how valuable it is to explore creativity and self-expression without the pressure of competition. Each class reminded me that movement can be healing, playful, and empowering. Being introduced to new genres and techniques expanded my view of dance as not just a skill, but as a form of storytelling and personal exploration.

Throughout the semester, I felt a genuine sense of curiosity, excitement, and transformation. At first, I was nervous—some of the styles were outside my comfort zone, and I didn’t always feel confident. But as the weeks went on, I began to let go of that fear and lean into the learning process. The welcoming, judgment-free environment made it easy to take risks and support others while doing so. I appreciated how the class encouraged collaboration and connection; I made new friendships simply by showing up, trying something new, and sharing space with others who were doing the same. I’ll always remember the feeling of growth from the first class to the final session—both in my technique and in my confidence.

As a Psychology major on a Pre-Med track, I found that many of the lessons from this course tied directly into my academic and professional goals. The mind-body connection that dance promotes is deeply relevant to understanding human behavior, mental health, and overall well-being—key areas of focus in both psychology and medicine. Through dance, I became more aware of how physical movement can influence emotional states and cognitive clarity, which aligns with the holistic approach to healthcare that I hope to practice. Additionally, the discipline, focus, and resilience needed in dance mirror the skills required in medicine, and I know that these qualities will benefit me throughout my academic journey and future career in healthcare.

In the end, this course was so much more than an elective—it was a personal and creative journey. I walked in with a competitive background and a desire to keep dancing, but I walked out with a deeper appreciation for dance as a lifelong practice. I’m incredibly grateful for the memories, lessons, and inspiration I gained. This class will always hold a special place in my college experience, and I sincerely hope to continue exploring dance in new ways as I grow!

Getting to Grow not Just Academically, but Personally

 Brianna Sacks

This class wasn’t just a class—it was a whole experience. From the very first day, I could tell it was going to be different (in the best way). One of my biggest takeaways is that learning is so much better when you actually want to be there. I learned how to express myself, listen to others, and not take everything so seriously—unless we’re talking about Professor Jorge’s love for apple pie, because that is serious business. I loved every second of being part of this class and getting to grow not just academically, but personally.

The learning process didn’t feel like a chore—it felt like hanging out with people who actually made me excited to show up. I loved meeting the boys in class (you know who you are), dancing around like Kung Fu Panda, and doing my legendary duet with Nina (our voices were low key iconic, not to brag). Even on days when I was tired or overwhelmed, this class gave me energy. Jorge created an environment where everyone felt seen, heard, and hyped up—and somehow we all ended up learning a ton in the process. It was magical, chaotic, and hilarious all at once.

As someone who wants to go into entertainment—like hosting, producing, or anything that puts me in front of a crowd—this class gave me confidence in my voice and the joy of connecting with people. Whether I’m on a stage or behind the scenes, I’ll carry the lessons, laughter, and vibes from this course with me. And honestly, I just hope Professor Jorge gets his well-deserved apple pie someday, because no one has earned it more. Thank you for everything, Jorge—this class changed the game.

The Trust and Joy We Built Together

Nina Gerson

My freshman year modern dance course at the University of Miami was one of the most rewarding experiences of my first year in college. Coming into the class, I didn’t fully know what to expect, but I walked away with so much more than just improved movement skills. I gained a deeper understanding of how the body expresses emotion, how space and structure influence performance, and how breath, rhythm, and intention shape the meaning behind each movement. The course taught me to be present, confident, and expressive, not just as a dancer, but as a person. One of my favorite parts was working in groups—especially with the friends I made in my own group—who became an important support system throughout the semester.

During the learning process, I felt challenged, inspired, and completely immersed. Each class offered something new, whether it was exploring choreography, creating portraiture poses, or building solo and ensemble scores. I loved how the course pushed me outside of my comfort zone and helped me tap into creativity and emotion in ways I hadn’t before. Working closely with my group allowed me to collaborate, share ideas, and grow through the experience of others. Those friendships became just as meaningful as the movement work itself, and I’ll always remember the trust and joy we built together.

I believe everything I learned in this course will carry over into my field of study. The ability to be aware of my body, to communicate through movement, and to work creatively with others are all skills that will benefit me in both academic and professional settings. Whether I’m presenting, leading, or working as part of a team, I’ll apply the mindfulness, presence, and expressiveness I developed in modern dance.
